CLIENT ALERT:
JURISDICTIONAL LIMIT OF VIRGINIA GENERAL DISTRICT COURTS TO INCREASE ON JULY 1, 2021
As a result of recent legislation enacted by the Virginia General Assembly, on July 1, 2021, the jurisdictional limit of the Virginia General District Courts will increase from disputes involving a maximum of $25,000.00 to those involving a maximum of $50,000.00, exclusive of interest and attorneys’ fee awards. General District Courts are not courts of record. They are, however, powerful courts of equity and provide a forum for efficiently and cost-effectively resolving civil disputes of all kinds. The benefits of these courts arise primarily from the fact that trial dates are readily available (in contrast with the circuit courts), and the discovery process is minimal and less expensive.
Campbell Flannery welcomes this change to Virginia law, and looks forward to litigating additional cases in Virginia’s General District Courts under the higher jurisdictional limit.
